If you have searched for the CSCS operatives test online at home, you are not alone. It is one of the most common questions we hear from people trying to get their first CSCS card. The short answer is no: the CITB Operatives test is sat in person at an approved test centre. But a lot of the process does happen online, and knowing which parts can save you time and money. This guide also breaks down the full CITB operatives test cost, so you know what you are paying for before you book.
Can you sit the CITB Operatives test at home?
No. The CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test for Operatives is taken on a touchscreen at a test centre, with staff checking your photo ID before you start. That supervision is what makes your pass trusted by CSCS, employers and site managers.
Be careful with any website that promises a “home” CITB test or a guaranteed pass. A result that doesn’t come from an approved centre won’t be accepted for a CSCS card, and you will have paid for nothing.
What you can do online
Most of the work around the test happens from your phone or laptop:
- Booking. Choose the Operatives test, pick a centre near you and a date that fits around work.
- Revision. Practise with free mock tests, such as our CITB Operatives practice tests, and the official CITB revision material.
- Rescheduling. You can usually move your date online, as long as you stay within the notice period in your booking terms.
- Your CSCS card application. Once you pass, the card application is done online too.
How much does the CITB Operatives test cost?
The official CITB operatives test cost is £23.50 per attempt. That is the price CITB lists for an HS&E test voucher.
If you book through a booking service such as Coteca, the price includes the CITB fee plus a service fee for booking, checking you have chosen the right test, and support if anything goes wrong. Our current CITB test booking price is £47, which includes the £23.50 CITB fee.
- Resits. Each attempt is a new booking, so preparation is the cheapest way to save money.
- Missed appointments. Arriving late or with the wrong ID can mean losing your slot and your fee.
- Travel. Choose a centre you can reach easily. We book at test centres across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
What to expect on test day
The Operatives test has 50 multiple-choice questions and you have 45 minutes to answer them. Arrive around 15 minutes early, bring the photo ID named in your booking confirmation, and expect to leave your phone and bag in a locker.
If you need support, such as a voiceover in another language or extra time, ask for it when you book, not on the day.
Your pass is valid for two years when you apply for a CSCS card, so there’s no need to rush the card application on the same day.
Book with confidence
The quickest route onto site is simple: revise online, book the right test, and pass it first time. Coteca can book your CITB Operatives test for you, confirm it’s the right test for the card you need, and send the confirmation straight to your inbox.
